[WIAW] Trying new things and a workout update

This is my first post for the What I Ate Wednesday series, hosted by Peas and Crayons. I realised a little late that it doesn't need to be Wednesday's food that you talk about, but nevertheless here we are.
Breakfast was Golden Syrup flavoured Oat-So-Simple with a chopped (read: hastily pulled apart with my bare hands) banana. I'm pretty lazy in the morning when it comes to breakfast so I generally grab the first thing I find in the cupboard.
For lunch I decided to use up some of the spinach and rocket I had in the fridge, so I cobbled together a hummus, ham, egg, spinach and rocket wrap with a Muller Light lemon Greek yogurt on the side. The wrap left a pretty strong eggy smell in the fridge at work, but it tasted really good. Definitely having that again, though I might add more hummus next time.

I'm lucky that we get free fruit in the office, so I grabbed myself an apple before I hit the gym.

Dinner (or tea if you're local) was inspired by Dannii's Chicken and Tarragon soup recipe. I had a spare chicken breast in the freezer so I thought I'd give it a go. It was nice, though I realised I'm not that big a fan of tarragon.
I had a few sticks of celery left in the fridge so I thought I'd have a starter and a dessert in one go. One stick of celery with hummus and one with peanut butter - I wasn't certain that this was a legit combination, but it really worked! I usually hate celery, but combined with peanut butter it tastes great! This will make a great post-apocalyptic snack.

After doing this first WIAW, I realised that I drink a fair amount of coffee when I'm in work. I tallied up  cups by the end of the day, which is a little too much for my liking. I'll see if I can halve that amount from now on.

And you have to end the day the British way with a nice cup of tea.

Workout update

My abs were aching more than a little, even though I didn't give them much of a workout at all on Monday. So instead I did 3 x 15 reps on the vertical chest (30kg) and a 15 minute session on the treadmill (Alpine Pass mode - max speed 10kph, max incline 12.5%). It was a much harder workout than Monday, but nothing too much, so I feel good for upping the ante a little.

What's your Achilles' Heel when it comes to snacking?

  1. You're doing better! Drink more water. Replace some of your coffee that way.
For me it's a matter of when I snack. Sometimes I get lazy and snack after nine at night, which isn't good.

    1. Good thinking, Alex. I've a box of peppermint tea under my desk in work, I should crack that out again.

    1. Thanks Jess. Doing things this way will mean I have to eat right or face the ire of the Internet :)

  3. My new favorite snack is Hummus. I've been eating by the bowl fulls! I need to find a low calorie recipe to try!

  4. Your breakfast looks like mine, I've perfected the "slicing banana with spoon" method as I always forget a knife.
I've been making loads of smoothies recently with protein powder, oats bananas and berries, I've often got to force myself to have lunch they are really filling. :)

  5. Oh yeah! I love the pics man! You crushed it today.
Do you share the fridge with other employees at work? If so that is awesome! It's the perfect storm, first blow awarded to Jamie with the egg and hummus nostril attack. Now lets see what they strike back with tomorrow , haha

    1. Ha, I do. They got more than a little stink when lunchtime came around! Thankfully there was no revenge :)

  6. I tend to be a spoon in the nut butter jar but I'm trying to improve that! I might have to try the celery with the nut butter - I like celery every other way than raw but if the nut butter makes it edible I'm willing to try it!

    1. Celery normally has too much tang for me to deal with, but the peanut butter neutralises it and now I can't seem to get enough of it!

  7. I've been craving wraps recently, and yours looks absolutely fab! I love peanut butter on celery sticks, even better if you had some raisins on top for a sweet and salty combo- known as ant on a log in the States!

    1. I was surprised how much the combination worked :) Hopefully there's enough spinach and rocket for another one tomorrow :)

I'll have to try it again with raisins and see how it fairs. Sounds like I'm going to have to go out and buy more celery!

  8. I love celery and pb, I don't have it enough though, as I use PB or other nut butters on practically everything ha! I have to say I often just pull apart bananas with my hands too, far too lazy :P

  9. Oh celery and peanut butter! Heart it so! I also take cranberry sauce and mix it with bream cheese and spread that on celery too! It's sweet and refreshing and somehow works! Hope you had fun participating in wiaw!! Xo
